The Dangers of Public School for Gifted Children

The needs of gifted children are oftentimes not met by the public or even private traditional schools.  There are countless aspects of a public school education that prevent the gifted child from fully developing his/her talents.

The negative socialization of many school environments impedes learning.  Negative socialization can vary from peer pressure to annoying distraction to life-threatening violence.  Bullying is an enormous problem in today’s public schools.  Gifted children are often targeted by underperforming students.  At best, this can prevent a gifted child from answering questions and participating in classroom discussion.  At worst, this can lead to crushing persecution.

The academic standards of the public school have come under great scrutiny in recent years.  The public school uses a mass-produced curriculum through which all students are taught.  This means that gifted students who can easily handle more difficult material are brought down to the status quo.  Their creativity is stifled and their ambition is curbed due to the dumbing-down of the public school.  "One size" curriculum doesn’t fit any child.

Gifted students often become bored with the curriculum and way in which it is taught in traditional schools.  They lose their drive to succeed and sometimes resort to misbehavior or classroom disruption.  When the schoolwork doesn't stimulate their minds, they attempt to find other outlets for their energies.  Public schools typically respond to this with punishment rather than considering the causes of delinquency.

The online gifted education program offered by The National Academy for the Gifted provides a desperately needed alternative that addresses each and every one of these public school failings.  Our students are encouraged to learn at their own pace.  They are free to pursue their imagination and focus on learning.  Our gifted education program brings out the natural curiosity for learning in students who might otherwise cause trouble in class.  The solution is not excessive discipline.  The solution is providing a gifted education alternative.  Accelerated learners need an accelerated education.
