Children's Differences Welcome

Many children are labeled as "twice-exceptional," meaning they have a learning difference and are gifted at the same time.  We are committed to helping your gifted child learn to take advantage of his or her learning differences and giftedness, and to find the union between the two.

ADD/ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

ADD/ADHD is a common diagnosis among children today. Most ADD/ADHD children are highly creative, energetic, non-conformists, dissatisfied with traditional schooling, restless when made to sit for inordinate amounts of time doing nothing of interest, and inventive. Many ADD/ADHD children have inherent giftedness that works well with their learning difference, when nurtured appropriately.

Brilliant, successful examples of people who have (or had) ADD/ADHD traits are:

  1. Bill Gates
  2. Oprah Winfrey
  3. Donald Trump
  4. Albert Einstein
  5. John F. Kennedy
  6. Martha Stewart
  7. Walt Disney
  8. Winston Churchill
  9. Alexander Graham Bell
  10. Galileo
  11. Mozart
  12. Leonardo Da Vinci
  13. Beethoven
  14. Thomas Edison
and many, many more

How The National Academy for the Gifted changes everything:

Gifted children with ADD/ADHD can thrive academically in the proper learning conditions.  Our gifted home education program provides a self-paced learning environment which makes all the difference to an energetic child who can multitask. The child is also free to concentrate on one subject at a time for as long as needed. The environment allows children with ADD/ADHD to focus on their school work rather than distractions.

Dyscalculia, Dyslexia and Dysgraphia

Dyscalculia is a term referring to a wide range of life-long learning challenges involving math. Dyslexia is the reversal of letters. Dyslexia is a challenge to the ability to interpret spatial relationships or to integrate auditory and visual information. Dysgraphia is a challenge to the ability to write.

How The National Academy for the Gifted changes everything:

The National Academy for the gifted allows your child to take as much time as needed to sound out words, focus on the structure of letters, and develop his or her reading comprehension. Because our school is a self-paced academic environment, students can learn when and how they are ready to.

Asperger’s Syndrome/Autism/PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorders)

These neuro-biological conditions result in highly varied symptoms, the most common of which is characterized by social and communication challenges.  Gifted children with Asperger's or PDD tend to have intense interests, sensory and developmental anomalies, and increased sensitivity to various stimuli.  Students with these conditions tend to require higher levels of attention and developmental assistance, which is often best provided in a home education environment.

How The National Academy for the Gifted changes everything:

First and foremost, parents have 24/7 access to their children in order to provide higher levels of parental care.  The National Academy for the Gifted’s cutting-edge home education curriculum allows students to perform their daily coursework in the safe and predictable environment of the home.  What learning environment is more appropriate for a child with a PDD than the comfort, safety, and familiarity of one’s own home?  The education environment can be adjusted to provide fewer loud noises, less harsh lighting, and fewer distractions.  Children are encouraged to pursue their passions rather than focusing on a strict core curriculum.

Chronic Conditions

Many children with chronic or long term diseases have come to see their illness as a gift. Chronic conditions can expose children to a lifestyle that enriches them. Children with Asthma, Bipolar, Cerebral Palsy, Diabetes, Crohn's Disease, Epilepsy, and Congenital heart problems all have needs that can be met by our flexible online education program.  The online educational program at the National Academy for the Gifted is ideally suited for children with chronic health issues because they can attend school when it is convenient for them, whether they are in out patient or in patient settings.

How The National Academy for the Gifted changes everything:

All your child needs to succeed is a computer and an internet connection.  This educational format is perfect for children with chronic illnesses who can’t always get to a classroom every day.  The opportunity to mix and match courses from different grade levels is a powerful way to reach a student where they are rather than forcing them to fit into a rigid grade level.

If your child has been diagnosed with a condition not listed here, feel free to call us at 1-866-9-LEARN-9 so that we can discuss with you how our gifted school may be able to meet your child’s needs.
